What is the technical escort?

Technical escorts are compulsory for vehicles that exceed the gauge limits laid down in the highway code, but in some cases they are required not only because of the size of the transport, but also because of the characteristics of the route.

The Ministerial Decree of 18 July 1997 defined the regulation of technical stocks for the first time in a comprehensive manner, clarifying the technical criteria, such as access regulations. The Decree also stipulated that technical escorts may only be provided by persons in possession of a prefectural authorisation and a regular licence issued by examination.

Exceptional traffic and road conditions

The regulations and subsequent amendments establish the number and position of escort vehicles in relation to the vehicle, with the quantity depending both on the dimensions and the type of road or motorway used.

There are many responsibilities for the escort leader, which relate in particular to compliance with all the prescriptions contained in the transit authorisations, and the authority to carry out extraordinary traffic, i.e. in relation to traffic conditions, has also been established. In fact, the escort has almost completely replaced the traffic police, bringing many logistical advantages for hauliers.
